My Newfound Passion

Its two years since I enrolled in IIUM Gombak for my undergraduate programme. Many things have changed since. After finishing my foundation days at Center for Foundation Studies IIUM, I have enrolled into Bachelor of Engineering (Materials) programme in IIUM Gombak.

In the first year of degree life, all engineering students, regardless of majoring, learn the same core subjects, which is:

MECH1301 STATICS
MATH1310 CALCULUS 1
EECE1311 ELECTRIC CIRCUITS
MANU1201 ENGINEERING DRAWING
MECH1302 DYNAMICS
EECE1312 ELECTRONICS
EECE1313 INTRO TO PROGRAMMING
MANU1202 WORKSHOP TECHNOLOGY
EECE1101 ENGINEERING LAB
MATH1320 CALCULUS 2

After completing these subjects, students will then proceed to 2nd year, taking subjects of their respective majoring, with a few exception of kulliyah and university required subjects.

Alhamdulillah, I am currently into my majoring. A lot of things have changed in my life. I am becoming busier than ever, participating in programmes and appointed for a post in Mahallah Representative Committee of my Mahallah.

And I found my new passion, which is ?? You guess what??

PHOTOGRAPHY....

It started out in September 2016, when I borrowed out my female friend's Nikon D7000 for an event, which made me fell in love with DSLRs. The image quality that I'm getting, is simply outstanding compared to the smartphone that I am currently using. After spending some time with her camera, in Lombok, Indonesia, for a programme, paired with 18-105mm kit zoom and 50mm f1.8 prime lens, I've decided, that I should get one myself.

Then, here it is.

My Trusty Baby D3300, with AF-P 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 Nikkor kit zoom.

Nikon D3300, an entry level DSLR from Nikon, paired with 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 kit zoom. How excited am I at the time, shooting things that I never could have done before. Sports, closeups, all things I tried to shoot. I tried to use various modes available in my camera, including the PASM modes, which include Program Auto, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual modes.

It made me realise, there is more to a photograph, than just aiming and shooting. The things that need to be kept in mind is EXPOSURE, COMPOSITION and STORYLINE.

A picture must be made to be properly EXPOSED, which means that, just enough is recieved by the sensor of the camera, by the means of manipulating these 3 variables:

- Shutter speed of camera
- Aperture of lens
- ISO sensitivity of camera

Deficiency of light, will result in underexposure, which is loss of shadow detail, where dark parts of the image is 'muddy' and indistiguishable from black. Conversely, excessive light results in overexposure, which is loss of highlight detail, where bright parts of the image are 'washed out' and indistiguishable from white. Thus, it can be concluded, that inappropriate exposure causes the important details of the photograph to be lost.

That's it for now. If you want more info about photography, just ask Google.
